L'àloe (Aloe),^[1] és un gènere de plantes angiospermes de la família de les asfodelàcies,^[2] natives d'Àfrica, la península Aràbiga i el subcontinent indi.^[2] Algunes espècies són utilitzades per les seves propietats medicinals, d'altres tenen aplicacions en cosmètica i d'altres són utilitzades com a plantes ornamentals.^[3] El concentrat del suc d'algunes de les seves espècies s'anomena sèver,^[4] també pot rebre la denominació d'àloe.^[5]

Descripció

Són plantes suculentes, sovint amb una roseta basal, fulles enteres, de vegades amb punxes als marges, i flors en forma de tub que acostumen a ser grogues o vermelles. El fruit és una càpsula.^[1]^[3]

Conreu

L'espècie més cultivada entre els diferents tipus d'àloe és l'àloe vera, de la qual les plantacions més importants es troben als Estats Units (Texas, Mèxic i Hawaii), Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, República Dominicana, Haití, Cuba, Mèxic i països del Sud d'Europa. En menor escala a Veneçuela, Mèxic, Arizona, Florida, sud-est Asiàtic i nord d'Àfrica (des de les Illes de Madeira fins al Sudan). Malgrat l'antic nom Aloe barbadensis, a Barbados ja gairebé no es cultiva.

Etimologia

La paraula té un origen molt incert: podria ser derivada de l' grec άλς, άλός (als, Alós), "sal" - donant άλόη, ης, ή (àloe, oés) que designava tant la planta com el seu suc - causa del seu sabor, que recorda l'aigua del mar. D'allí va passar al Llatí àloe, és amb la mateixa acceptació, i que, en sentit figurat, significava també "amarg". S'ha proposat també un origen àrab, alloeh , que significa "la substància amarga brillant"; però probablement té un origen una mica més complex a través de l'hebreu: Ahal (אהל), freqüentment citat en textos bíblics.^[6]^[7]

Usos històrics

Hi ha una representació d'Àloe, etiquetada en grec "ΑΛΟΗ" (Aloë) en el Còdex Juliana Anícia, una còpia, escrita a Constantinoble el 515 d.C., de l'obra de Dioscòrides Pedaci del segle I dC.^[8]L'ús històric de diverses espècies d'àloe està ben documentat. La documentació de l'eficàcia clínica està disponible, tot i que relativament limitada.^[9]

Del mig miler d'espècies, només unes poques eren utilitzades tradicionalment com a herbes medicinals, i Aloe vera de nou sent l'espècie més utilitzada. També s'inclouen A. perryi i A. ferox. Els antics grecs i romans utilitzaven l'àloe vera per tractar les ferides. A l'edat mitjana, el líquid groguenc que es troba dins de les fulles es va afavorir com a purgant.^[8] L'Àloe no processat que conté aloina s'utilitza generalment com a laxant, mentre que el suc processat no sol contenir cap quantitat d'aloina significativa.^[10] Aloe perryi, A. barbadensis, A. ferox, i altres híbrids d'aquesta espècie amb A. africana i A. spicata figuren com a substàncies aromatitzants naturals a la llista del US government Electronic Code of Federal Regulations.^[11] L'Aloe socotrina que es fa servir en la fórmula del Chartreuse.^[12]

Taxonomia

Aquest gènere va ser publicat per primer cop l'any 1753 a l'obra Species Plantarum de Carl von Linné (1707-1778).^[2]

L'actual sistema de classificació APG IV situa aquest gènere dins la subfamília de les asfodelòidies.^[13]
