Nickelodeon Global (formerly Nickelodeon Europe and Nickelodeon Commercial Light) is a specialized children's TV channel and the international version of the American Nickelodeon channel. It is operated by Paramount Networks EMEAA in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and by Paramount Networks Americas in Latin America and Brazil.

History

Nickelodeon Export

Since the late 1980s, many European countries have hosted the American version of the channel. Including the USSR in 1988,[1] where Nickelodeon became available without translation.[2][3] This came about after the heads of MTV Networks Europe came to register MTV Europe[4] after following the penetration strategy that was used in 1987 when the company launched MTV Europe. The owner Viacom (now Paramount) decided not to bring an independent Nickelodeon to Europe in order to minimize risks.[5] On September 1, 1993, Nickelodeon UK was launched in partnership with BSkyB, now Sky UK, and this version was subsequently distributed throughout the rest of Europe.[6][7][8]

Nickelodeon Global

The current pan-European channel was officially launched on November 15, 1998 under the name Nickelodeon Europe. The channel broadcast around the clock.[9]

Between 1998 and 2000, Nickelodeon Europe was launched in Malta, Romania, and Hungary.

In the early 2000s, four blocks, Nick Movies, Toons on Toast, Nick Zone, and Nick Double, were added.

In 2004, the channel expanded to the rest of Eastern Europe, broadcasting in Russian, and from May 2004 to September 2012, Nickelodeon Europe was used as the main TV channel in the CIS and Baltic countries.[10][11]

From 2008 to 2012, the channel periodically experienced failures on the air, including 'with a sound track', as a result of which animated series in English were released for some time period. During the same period, the promo texts were removed.

On Valentines Day 2010, a new corporate logo was introduced, matching others around the world, but with a new design.[12][13][14] In the same year, the TV channel began broadcasting under a Czech license, since minimum broadcasting rules apply in the Czech Republic, it was chosen for licensing purposes in the EU. The broadcasting center is still located in London.

During 2010-2013, Nickelodeon Europe expanded to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

On September 17, 2011, Nickelodeon switched to widescreen broadcasting (16:9). On October 4, 2011, Nickelodeon Europe switched to HD format. The TV channel in some countries, including the CIS, is referred to as Nickelodeon HD.

In 2013, Amsterdam took over the programming of the TV channel.[15][16]

In October 2017, audio tracks in Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian were added for the Baltic States.[17]

On 31 August 2021, Nickelodeon Europe was renamed to Nickelodeon Global, the channel can now serve 85 countries of the world.[18] Nickelodeon Global retains the Czech license (RRTV) in order to ensure the continuation of legal broadcasting in the European Union in accordance with the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) and the Single Market Law after the UK leaves the European Union.

On 5 April 2022, a Kazakh-language audio track was added for Kazakhstan.[19]

From December 2022, Nickelodeon Global is again used as the main TV channel in the CIS countries (with the exception of Russia and Belarus) thereby replacing the local version – Nickelodeon Russia.[20]

On 1 June 2023, a Ukrainian-language audio track was added,[21] replacing the Nickelodeon Ukraine Pluto TV channel.[22]

On 1 August 2023, a rebranding was made, which included an updated version of the logo and a new design.[23]

Nickelodeon CEE

Nickelodeon CEE was launched in early December 2004.[24][25][26]
