CryEngine on pelimoottori, jonka kehitti saksalainen videopelikehittäjä Crytek. He käyttivät CryEngineä ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 2004 julkaistussa Far Cry-pelissä. Nykyään myös muut kuin Crytekin omat pelit käyttävät CryEngineä.
Ubisoftilla on CryEnginen pohjalta rakennettu Dunia Engine-pelimoottori.[1]
Amazonilla on CryEngineen perustuva Lumberyard pelimoottori, jota yhtiö käyttää peleissään.[2]
Versiohistoria
CryEngine 1
Crytek kehitti CryEngine 1:n Nvidialle pelidemoksi. Nvidia tykkäsi demosta, jonka jälkeen siitä tehtiin kokonainen peli. Siitä syntyi vuonna 2004 julkaistu Far Cry.
Kun näytönohjaimet saivat Shader 3.0-tuen julkaistiin sitä tukeva CryEngine 1.2. HDR-renderöinti lisättiin versioon 1.3.
Korealainen NCsoft käyttää CryEngineä Aion: The Tower of Eternity-pelissä.[3] Vuonna 2006 Ubisoft osti oikeudet käyttää CryEngineä tulevissa Far Cry-peleissä.[4]
CryEngine 2
CryEngine 2 kehitettiin Crysista varten. Pelimoottorin päivietty versio julkaistiin Crysis Warheadiin.
CryEngine 3
Crytek esitteli CryEngine 3:n vuoden 2009 Game Developers Conference-tapahtumassa. Sitä kehitetään Windows-, PlayStation 3-, Xbox 360- ja Wii U-alustoille. Windows-laitteille luvataan tuki DirectX 9, 10 ja 11-versioille.[5]
Ensimmäinen CryEngine 3:sta käyttävä peli oli 2009 julkaistu Crysis 2.[6]
Vuonna 2011 julkaistiin kehittäjille työkalut modien tekemiseen CryEngine 3:lla Crysis 2-peliin.[7] Samalla he julkaisivat ilmaisen version CryEnginestä kehittäjille käytettäväksi ei-kaupalliseen käyttöön nimellä CRYENGINE® Free SDK.[8]
Vuonna 2011 Crytek julkaisi alkuperäisen Crysis-pelin konsoleille käyttäen CryEngine 3-pelimoottoria Xbox Liven ja PlayStation Networkin kautta.[9][10]
Elokuussa 2013 Crytek ilmoitti tiputtavansa versionumeron CryEngine 3:n perästä, jolloin pelimoottorin nimeksi tuli CryEngine. Samalla ilmoitettiin, ettei tulevilla versioilla tule olemaan erillistä numerointia pelimoottorin nimen perässä.
2015 vuoden kesäkuussa julkaistu CryEngine 3.8.1 tuo tuen OpenGL-rajapinnalle, Linuxille ja Oculus Rift-laseille.[11]
CryEngine V
22. maaliskuuta 2016 Crytek julkisti CryEngine V:n. Pelimoottorin lisensoitiin lisättiin malli "maksa mitä haluat", jolla pääsee myös pelimoottorin lähdekoodiin.[12]
27. syyskuuta 2017 CryEngine 5.4 julkaistiin, ja siinä tuli uusina ominaisuuksina mm. Vulkan-renderöijä, uusia C#-malleja, päivityksiä 3D-malleja käsittelevään järjestelmään ja uusia tekniikoita reunanpehmennykseen. [13]
