Rok psikedelis adalah genre musik rock yang terinspirasi, dipengaruhi, atau mewakili budaya psikedelik, yang berpusat pada obat-obatan halusinogen yang mengubah persepsi. Musiknya menggabungkan efek suara elektronik baru dan efek rekaman, solo yang diperluas, dan improvisasi.[2] Banyak kelompok psikedelik berbeda dalam gaya, dan label sering diterapkan secara palsu.[3]
Berasal pada pertengahan 1960-an di antara musisi Inggris dan Amerika, suara psychedelic rock memunculkan tiga efek inti LSD: depersonalisasi, dekronisisasi, dan dinamisasi, yang semuanya memisahkan pengguna dari kenyataan.[3] Secara musikal, efeknya dapat direpresentasikan melalui trik studio baru, instrumentasi elektronik atau non-Barat, struktur lagu disjungtif, dan segmen instrumental yang diperluas.[4] Beberapa musisi psychedelic rock awal 1960-an berbasis folk, jazz, dan blues, sementara yang lain menunjukkan pengaruh klasik India yang disebut "raga rock". Definisi

Istilah "psikedelik" diciptakan pada tahun 1956 oleh psikiater Humphry Osmond dalam sebuah surat kepada eksponen LSD Aldous Huxley dan digunakan sebagai deskripsi alternatif untuk obat halusinogen dalam konteks psikoterapi psikedelik. Sebagai adegan kontra budaya berkembang di San Francisco, istilah rock asam dan rock psychedelic digunakan pada tahun 1966 untuk menggambarkan musik baru yang dipengaruhi obat dan digunakan secara luas pada tahun 1967. Kedua istilah ini sering digunakan secara bergantian, tetapi rock asam dapat dibedakan. sebagai variasi yang lebih ekstrim yang lebih berat, lebih keras, mengandalkan kemacetan panjang, lebih fokus langsung pada LSD, dan memanfaatkan distorsi yang lebih besar.
