Sejarah paleontologi melacak sejarah upaya untuk memahami sejarah kehidupan di Bumi dengan mengkaji catatan fosil yang ditinggalkan oleh organisme-organisme hidup. Karena terpusat pada pemahaman organisme hidup pada masa lampau, pelaontologi dapat dianggap sebagai bidang biologi, tetapi perkembangan historisnya sangat berkaitan dengan geologi dan upaya untuk memahami sejarah Bumi itu sendiri.
