ウィリアム・ジョン・スウェインソン

ウィリアム・ジョン・スウェインソン（William John Swainson FLS, FRS、1789年10月8日 – 1855年12月6日）は、イギリスの動物学者（鳥類学者、軟体動物学者、貝類学者、昆虫学者）であり、博物画家でもある。

生涯

ウィリアムは、ロンドン・リンネ協会の創立メンバーであったティモシー・スウェインソン2世（1756年〜1824年）の長男として、ロンドンのサウスロンドン（英語版）にあるニューイントン（英語版）の一角を占めていた当時のセントメアリーズ・パリシュ/聖母マリア小教区（英：St. Mary's parish、cf.）に属する一区ドーバープレイス（英：Dover Place）で生まれた。父ティモシーは税務の役人で、リバプールで生物採集を行う人であった。父ティモシーはアマチュア植物学者アイザック・スウェインソン（英語版）（1746年〜1812年）の従弟にあたる。ウィリアム少年は吃音のために教育をあまり受けることができなかった。

14歳になったウィリアムは、リバプールの税務署の事務員になった。その後、陸軍の兵站部に入隊し、マルタ島やシチリア島に派遣された。シチリア西部では昆虫を研究した。しかし、健康上の問題でイギリスに戻り、除隊後、父親と同じくリンネ協会のフェローになった。

1816年（26-27歳時）、ウィリアムは探検家ヘンリー・コースターのブラジル探検に加わった。コースターはすでにブラジル探検を行い、著書『ブラジル旅行』（"Travels in Brazil"）で有名になっていた。ウィリアムは、ブラジルでロシア帝国の外交官で探検家のゲオルク・ハインリッヒ・フォン・ラングスドルフと出会っている。ブラジルから20,000を超える昆虫標本、1,200の植物標本、120の魚類の博物画、760の鳥の剥製とともにイギリスに戻った。1820年12月24日、王立協会のフェローに選ばれた。

大英博物館の動物学部門長であったウィリアム・エルフォード・リーチ（英語版）に勧められて博物画を製作し、『動物学図譜』（"Zoological Illustrations"：1820–23）で、リトグラフを図版の製作に用いた。リトグラフの使用は比較的安価で、版画家を必要としない利点があった。図版付きの多くの著作を出版した。注文があるとリトグラフ印刷した図版に自ら手彩色を施した。植物画家としての技術は高い評価を得た。リーチが病気で大英博物館の職から引退すると、その後任を目指したスウェインソンであったが、その職を継いだのはジョン・ジョージ・チルドレン（英語版）であった。

ウィリアム・ジョン・スウェインソンの時代のイギリスでは、ウィリアム・シャープ・マクリーの唱えた「キナリア・システム / クィナリア・システム（英語版） (quinarian system) （直訳：五進法体系）」という動物学分類体系が一時的に流行し、スウェイソンもその体系を支持した。マクリーとスウェインソンは共にイギリスを去り、1841年にスウェインソンはニュージーランドに移住した。ニュージーランドではイギリス国教会の司祭などの職に就き、科学分野の仕事からしばらく遠ざかった。

1851年、オーストラリアに渡る。1852年にオーストラリア政府の植物調査官の職を得、翌年、報告書を書くも、植物学の知識の欠如のために専門家から評価されることはなかった。

1854年にニュージーランドに戻り、翌1855年12月6日に66歳で死亡した。
