Platysoma er en gruppe (slekt) av stumpbiller.

Utseende

Små til middelsstore, avlange og nokså flate, oftest blankt svarte stumpbiller. Kroppen er nokås jevnbred og temmelig flat. Hodet har forholdsvis kraftige, foroverrettede mandibler, middelsstore fasettøyne og korte, klubbeformede antenner. Pronotum har gjerne skarpe lengdefurer på sidene. Dekkvingene er vanligvis noe forkortede (dekker ikke hele bakkroppen), med få men skarpe punktstriper. Beina er korte og kraftige.

Levevis

Stumpbillene kan finnes i mange ulike habitater, men de fleste er på en eller annen måte knyttet til råtnende dyre- eller plantemateriale. De er rovdyr som lever av andre insekter, for eksempel fluelarver eller billelarver. Mange arter finnes på møkk eller åtsel. Noen arter, som gjerne er flate på form, lever under barken på døde trær. En del arter har spesialisert seg på barkbiller. Disse er tynne og sylindriske slik at de kan komme til i barkbillenes ganger. Noen arter er knyttet til reir av gnagere eller fugler.
