Biografija

McGrath je rođen 1953. u sjevernoirskom gradu Belfastu i odrastao je u Downpatricku gdje je pohađao školu Down. U septembru 1966. upisao se na Metodistički koledž u Belfastu i fokusirao se na učenje matematike, fizike i kemije. Godine 1971. započinje studij kemije na Koledž Wadham pri Univerzitetu u Oxfordu i završava ga 1975. godine, a potom odlazi na Koledž Linacre i počinje s istraživanjem molekularne biofizike na oksfordskom odsjeku biokemije pod vodstvom profesora Georgea Radde. Iako je odrastao kao ateist, McGrath tokom univerzitetskih dana počinje iskazivati interes za religijom i konvertira na kršćanstvo. Godine 1976. dobiva postdiplomsku stipendiju i paralelno pohađa doktorski studij biofizike na Koledž Merton odnosno diplomski studij teologije, te završava oba 1978. godine.

Nakon stjecanja prvog doktorata McGrath odlazi predavati na Koledžu St John pri Univerzitetu u Cambridgeu, gdje istovremeno nastavlja studij teologije na Westcottu odnosno pripremu zaređenja za svećenika Engleske Crkve. Đakonom je postao u septembru 1980. i služi kao kapelan u crkvi sv. Leonarda u Wollatonu (Nottingham), a anglikanskim svećenikom postao je godinu dana kasnije u Southwell Minsteru. Godine 1983. postavljen je za predavača na oksfordskom Koledžu Wycliffe Hall, te istovremeno postaje članom Oksfordskog teološkog fakulteta. Jesenski semestar 1990. proveo je radeći kao profesor na američkom Univerzitetu Drew u Madisonu.

Godine 1993. McGrath je izabran za univerzitetskog istraživačkog predavača teologije na Univerzitetu u Oxfordu, dok istovremeno (od 1993. do 1996. godine) radi i kao istraživački profesor teologije na kanadskom Koledžu Regent u Vancouveru. Za ravnatelja Wycliffe Halla izabran je 1995. godine, a 1999. dobiva titulu profesora historijske teologije Univerziteta u Oxfordu. Na temelju istraživanja historijske i sistematske teologije godine 2001. dobiva drugi doktorat. Iste godine bio je jedan od osnivača Međunarodnog društva za nauku i religiju (ISSR). U septembru 2008. postao je čelnik Centra za teologiju, religiju i kulturu na Kraljevskom koledžu u Londonu. Godine 2013. na temelju istraživanja odnosa religije i nauke i prirodne teologije McGrath dobiva svoj treći oksfordski doktorat. Tri dodatna počasna doktorata dobio je od Teološkog sjemeništa u Virginiji (1996), Teološkog koledža u Belfastu (2005), te Koledža Wycliffe pri Univerzitetu u Torontu (2007). Od 2014. radi kao profesor na londonskom Koledžu Gresham.
