Vinton Gray Cerf (ur. 23 czerwca 1943 w New Haven) – amerykański informatyk, uważany za jednego z ojców Internetu.

Życiorys

Vinton uzyskał licencjat z matematyki na Stanford University w 1965 roku oraz stopień naukowy doktora (PhD-Doctor of Philosophy) w dziedzinie nauk komputerowych Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim – kolejno w 1970 i 1972.

W czasie pracy w Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency w latach 1976–1982 Cerf odegrał kluczową rolę w opracowaniu protokołu modelu TCP/IP. Jako wiceprezes MCI Digital Information Services od 1982 do 1986 kierował rozwojem MCI Mail – pierwszego komercyjnego serwisu poczty elektronicznej podłączonego do Internetu. Jest autorem kilku Request for Comments. W 1992 roku założył stowarzyszenie Internet Society.

W grudniu 1997, razem z Bobem Kahnem, został uhonorowany za swoje osiągnięcia przez prezydenta Billa Clintona amerykańskim odznaczeniem National Medal of Technology. W 1995 roku został laureatem Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Award. W 2004 został wspólnie z Kahnem uhonorowany Nagrodą Turinga. Zostały mu także przyznane kilkukrotnie tytuły doctor honoris causa.

Obecnie Cerf pracuje nad Interplanetary Protocol (zobacz: Internet międzyplanetarny), który ma być standardem radiowo-laserowej komunikacji międzyplanetarnej, odpornej na degradację sygnału.

Od 1999 do 2007 był członkiem zarządu ICANN.

8 września 2005 Google Inc. ogłosiło, że angażuje Cerfa jako „wiceprezesa i naczelnego ewangelistę Internetu”^[1][2][3].
